NHL Draft Analysis

Duck Anatomy   / Hot Stove 2014/01/25

The Ducks are flying and with plenty of unhatched eggs are in a position of strength come the Trade Deadline, these are Ducks of Prey!

Just in case some might think the well is dry after, the Ducks had two draft picks at the World Juniors.  Nick Kerdiles 2012/2/36 had 2 goals & 5 assists for the USA and Nick Sorensen (2013/2/45) had 2 goals & 4 assists for Sweden.

In addition to Ottawa's first in 2014, the Ducks also have Toronto's second pick in 2014 for Peter Holland.

Trading to win it all is great if it works, and it did when Burke traded the farm for Chris Pronger.   By giving up Lupul 02/1/7, Smid 04/1/9 and picks that turned out to be Eberle & Hamonic (& Nick Ross) he left little wiggle room for restocking the franchise with future picks.

Unfortunately for the Ducks, Burke's four drafts at the helm were a disaster.

Burke's first 3 picks in 2006 never played a NHL game, his first pick from 2007 has never played a NHL game, his second 2007 pick Tincardi never played a game for the Ducks & just scored his 3rd NHL goal, and his 3rd pick Macenauer scored 1 NHL Goal.

Jake Gardiner his 2008 first round pick never played a game for the Ducks and in fact was part of a package traded to Burke to get Francois Beauchemin from the Leafs.  Bobby Ryan the second pick in 2005 was recently criticized by Burke, the man who drafted him.

Ironically, Bob Murray traded Pronger to start his rebuild, acquiring the very same Lupul 2/1/7, Sbisa 8/1/19 and the 21st pick in 2009 and the 29th pick in 2010.  He then flipped the 21st pick to Columbus for the 26th and 37th picks, with the picks turning into Palmieri, Etem & Mat Clark.

Bob Murray has not only been able to improve the Ducks with First Rounders, he has also reached deeper into the draft during his short tenure.  Current Ducks include:

Sami Vatanen2009/4/106
Devante Smith-Pelly2010/2/42
Frederic Andersen2012/3/87

Bob Murray became the Ducks GM on November 12, 2008, the same day Brian Burke resigned. Today, the Murray built Ducks are flying high, while Brian Burke watches the Calgary Flames every night.

Murray has built the Ducks through informed drafting, astute Free Agent Signing and horse trading.  He has not been scared to trade First Rounders or to acquire Low Rounders.

Only six Ducks remain from the Burke era and only three can be attributed to Burke.  Getzlaf and Perry were both drafted by Bryan Murray and Dustin Penner was a Free Agent singed by Bryan Murray.  Burke presided over four Duck Drafts but only 4th Rounder Matt Beleskey remains from all his picks.  Burke did bring Teemu Selanne and Jonas Hillar to the Pond.

Murray has obtained first rounders in Lupul, Sbisa, Cogliano, and Noesen, as well as trading first rounders Pronger, Lupul, Gardiner and Holland. Murray understands first round currency better than most and does not hold on to his own guys just because he drafted them, as was the case of Peter Holland.

Picking up ridiculously late rounders has been key, as Murray has seen what others have not in Winnick (Phoenix 04/9/265), Perrault (Washington 06/6/177), Bonido (San Jose 07/6/173), and Maroon (Philadelphia 07/6161).

Murray presided over the 1998 & 1999 drafts for the Hawks.  In 1998 with the 156th pick he took Kent Huskins who played 318 games & with the 183rd pick took Tyler Arnason who played 487 NHL games.

Rolling Snake Eyes

Eleven, count them Eleven First Round Picks now playing for the Ducks.  This doesn't include the four in the Minors (M) and it doesn't include Ottawa's 2014 first rounder that is going to the Ducks courtesy of the Bobby Ryan Trade.  Do you think they know something?
